Has anyone ever come across an article about why this was done? I'm also wondering if the Bank of Canada or printing companies used asterisks to identify something other than simple replacements. I don't think the Bank of Canada would take much notice if a few banknote collectors inquired about them but maybe a respected publisher like the Charlton Press might have more luck. Maybe we could get Charlton interested in solving the mystery.

I picked up another replacement note on the weekend. The population on this one is 240,000, so it's not particularly rare, but it is a decent grade, so I am happy with it.
