Hey everyone,

Does the 2008 20 cents - wave gap considered an 'Error' or 'Variety'?

Also is there an estimation on mintage?

Tried to search online however could not find much information

Thanks

Re variety or error question, not sure whether it has ever been decided whether these are due to a deliberate change to the dies, or caused by die fill, or a worn die.

They do occur in several years and I have always thought that the cause was either die fill or a worn die, but that's just my opinion.

I have images for these years - 1966, 1967, 1981, 1982, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2005, 2008. There may be other years.

Mintage figures is anyone's guess, and would only really be relevant if the change was due to a deliberate change of the die.

A bit more info may be in this lot.

I say variety - apparently the Wedding Set coins of that year all have the gap and I don't think that is due to die fill. Probably a Wedding Set die ended up in the circulation die rotation somehow.

In my looking at change the gap coin is about 0.8% to 0.9% of the mintage so you can figure out a rough mintage from that.

I have 4 2008 wave gaps, and been wondering the same thing. Error or variety 🤷 #8205;#9794;#65039;

Pretty sure it's a variety - I looked at a lot of 20c pieces for 2009 to 2014 or so to see if there were any similar coins but I didn't see any.

I go with variety. I have some very clean 2008's (13 all together) and there is a distinct gap
