My son just recently started to collect coins and has been shopping around on ebay. He said he got a great deal on a 1921 Russian Ruble and showed me what he just purchased and after a closer look it looked like it could be fake. I am by no means an expert in spotting counterfeits and wanted a second opinion. So my question is: Is this real? And how can you tell so I know for the future.

That slab is completely meaningless unfortunately. Considering they put AU45 which isn't a real grade I would just assume that coin is as bad as that "company"

Could be authentic, but the slab has about as much value as my dog's fecal droppings.
Rest in Peace

PCCB is a generic Chinese slab company, so odds are it being fake.

The design looks "mushy"-it lacks the detail one would expect. The colour looks wrong, too, but that is a smaller issue.

Compare this to a real one (see an example on NGC World Coin price guide), and you will see that the fake one looks very poorly made.

I'd walk away from this one. Too many bad signs.

A genuine 1921 rouble lists for $140 in XF40 according to reputable grading service NGC so the price alone is a tip-off that there's a problem.
This should be a teachable moment for your son and he should return the coin for a refund if possible.

If it were me, I'd walk away from this coin. Look how mushy the letters are. And check the rims on the reverse.

FAKE Chinese cast copy of a coin in VF condition at best.

I would avoid buying any coin from ebay not from a civilized country. Especially nothing from China, the home of lies and fake everything.

Pictures nowhere good enough to make any reasonable assessment if fake or authentic.

Impossible to confirm the weight inside the slab.
Need to break it to confirm weight.
That is why fake slabs are good at hiding fake coins.
