I would like to know if the defect on this dime is from the original stamping process, and how would I prove or disprove this. also, does the error detract or add to the value?
@basrobcoins, first welcome to CCF. Second, while this coin started out whole when it left the mint, the front was sanded down and the RL initials carved into the metal. On the reverse, it appears as though there is some sort of pin or extra metal which was added, perhaps as a way to attach it to clothing. The numismatic value of the coin is now only in the silver content; however, some folks collect these so-called love tokens and so there might be someone willing to pay over melt for it.
