fenton, Go for it....this coin is a BEAUTY!...this is what the big boys at major auctions want and will grab deep into their pockets to have.
I think it's a MS66 all day...I hope you get it!

Striking was very kind to this coin, just a few contact marks. Love the obverse toning gives it the Gothic look. A beautiful coin that would grade MS65+

I think I'm priced out of this one - can't really justify going to $400 even though it's gorgeous. Getting up to MS-67 type money there and I don't think this coin is quite there.

Not surprising, the value of this coin is in the unique toning, regardless of the actual grade.

I'm not sure if the price war is due to the toning, which is nice but not truly exceptional like the PCGS top pop MS68+, or the grade. I'm leaning toward bidders feeling like me that the toning is attractive but also that the coin was undergraded. I took a look at a lot of 67's up for sale. A couple were pristine, but a lot had more flaws than this coin.

What did this grade at? It would be hard to assume this would make a 67 based on photos alone, especially since the heavy toning may obscure some marks (like the field contact marks behind the head and in front of the neck). And there's also the rim ding on the reverse. But I'm sure someone would pay several hundred for that toning even if it's a technical 65 or 66.

Interesting coin, I can certainly see why this piece caught your eye.
It's hard to judge from a single image, but it appears to have that cameo contrast that I love when the portrait is frosted or the fields are slightly mirrored. This gives the effect of dark fields and a bright portrait, but the fields would come to life if the coin is tilted. Need multiple images to get a better feel for exactly what is going on.
This is most likely bag toned, the color is on the side that was against the bag,the reverse faced inwards and is thus untoned.
A very pleasant example, perhaps slightly undergraded but the green bean signifies that in JA's opinion it's not undergraded by a full point (or it would have a gold bean).
This type of eye appeal carries a fairly substantial premium, price guides become meaningless.

Fenton, I could easily see this piece reaching over $1k, however......with only one set of pictures, it's a heck of a crapshoot. Who knows what this piece really looks like in hand.

The toning on this might be from a whitman book , or old bank roll. Nice Reverse with die cleaning marks, otherwise sharp coin. Being very critical, MS65+ Nicer photo in slab!
