Hi ALL I wondered if anyone could please help me to identify this coin, I have spent hours online trying to locate it. Sadly the coin is not in the best of conditions, I found it while digging in the back garden and tried to clean it up as best I could without damaging it. If anyone could help it would be most appreciated. Just encase it helps, I am in the United Kingdom and live on the south coast (East Sussex) and live in a farm house built in the 14th century, which was one of the gatehouses to Henry VIII hunting grounds. I mention this, because I assume the coin is after that date, although I cannot identity the king/queen on the back.... Regards MateyUK   Edited by MateyUK

What is the diameter? The design in the first photo with the letter L in four places makes me think this is a coin or token of one of the French kings named Louis, 17th century . We have a few experts here on French coins who may be able to ID it rather quickly. Edited by tdziemia

My guess is an early 18th century French token. The design resembles certain French Louis XIV gold coins from around 1700, but I can't see that it actually matches any French coin.

The alternating crowns and Fleur de lis are a pattern from the Krauwinckel tokens of Nuremburg, but I think usually they are in thirds not quarters. Also, I don't remember the inclusion of the letter L into the pattern so maybe a French jeton is more likely as noted by @erafjel.

Hi All Thank you all for the feedback, Ive also been looking up different KING Louis of France, as I had feeling it may have been french as well. But no luck as of yet. Sadly the coin is very warn and there is little to see, the images I uploaded before had been enhanced and I have tried to do the same again, but I'm worried if I try and remove anymore rust, that I will loose the images I have. here are two more, incase it helps. I was trying to get a clearer picture of the writing on both sides.   |

Does anyone know the significance of the four letter L's in the middle, I have noted that some king Louis of France have six L's, but some only 1 or 2? but cannot work out the significance of the letter or how many times it appears....
Also just to reply to an earlier post, the coin is about 2cm / 20mm in width/Diameter

On coins, the number of L's has no significance. The L's are just part of a decorative design and the number can range from 1 to 8.

The better pictures do help. I'll search my books for four of each: Fleur de lis, L, and crown.
I see a large profile, but no hint of a date or denomination.
Update: Not hard to find four of each plus profile as above, but no match on any coins I saw.
