NGC - The 1804 Draped Bust dollar is often called the "King of American Coins." Only 15 examples are known: 8 originals (Class I), 6 restrikes (Class III) and 1 restrike without edge lettering (Class II). Even the lowest-graded specimens (Class III) are worth a fortune, as evidenced by a specimen graded About Uncirculated-55 by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) that sold for $1,880,000 in 2014.

Of course, with such a large amount of money to be made, some enterprising counterfeiters will alter genuine dollars to pass them off as extreme rarities. That is the case with the example shown here.

I wonder why an obviously skilled counterfeiter would waste his effort to fake such a scrutinized coin. Maybe he thought he was so good that his altered date could never be detected?

A great many of these altered date pieces date back to the 19th century. They weren't done after the genuine coins featured became so well known. When they were done the host coins were relatively inexpensive and the resulting coins were not marketed to knowledgeable collectors.

I am happy to have a better quality, but obvious (pressure cast) fake.
It is the only way I will ever get to own an 1804.

Since the provenances of all genuine examples are known, my example has a 100% guarantee of being fake.
That way I am not deceived, and I cannot deceive anyone if pass it on.
