Hi, I really know very little about US coins - but I came across a few while rummaging around in an odds and sods box I have. Not sure if it's worth investigating further. *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

The 1909-S is one of the key coins in the Indian Head cent series with only 309,000 minted. I'm not an expert on these, so I'll let the others comment on this coin.

It looks like a 1909-S, one of the keys of the IHC set. I'll let the pros decide whether it looks real enough to submit to a TPG. But if they think "yes" definitely submit it (PCGS or NGC). It will cost you $100+ to do so but my guess it will be worth in the $800+ range.

How in heck did a coin minted in San Francisco end up in the UK? Do you remember how much you paid for it? This will excite the Indian cents' collectors among us.

Can you possibly give us a strong close-up of the date?

Here's a couple more of the date - My set up for photographing these isn't great. I bought a small box of coins in Dublin in the late 80's (for about £5) and there were about 10 cents from the USA in it. I think one of the others is a Lincoln 1909 VDB S - but I can't find it. It's in a box somewhere I think. I understand it's quite a rarity.

From what I can see, the basic diagnostics look right, including the weakly struck feathers at the top of the headdress.

Thanks everyone. That was a nice discovery. Even though I have circa 8,000 coins they are mostly all hammered, ancient or 18th or 19th century. With zero slabs. I think there is a UK branch of one of the big 2 companies that I can investigate further. Might be better to send this one and that vdb one together.... if I can find it.

Finding 2 rare U.S. coins in the same box from Dublin triggers a red flag for me. Hope they end up being genuine, but we need real good photos to help with that. John1

Certainly does sound improbable.

Will do. Is the consensus that this one is worth a shot?
I can't really remember too much about it, It was 30 odd years ago, I just remember buying a lot of hammered Indian coins that came from a dealers shop that closed down after he died. About 150 or so, which was quite a big purchase at the time. There was another box of mixed coins that I just bought as well but never really got round to looking at them too closely until dug some of them out again during COVID.
