I want to grade this one G-4, but I'm not certain about that since the reverse rim has worn dow into the legend (northwest). How would you grade it if it were your coin?
Hi Ralph, I'm confident it deserves a Good-4 grade. The reverse rim is maybe 70% complete with only slight wear into the legend as you point out. I think that degree of reverse wear is still acceptable for the grade.
Here's an ANACS-graded G-4 example from Heritage which sold for $299 in March, 2008. It's a close match for your coin!
Maybe as high as G6/G4. Barber halves are notorious for having weakly struck REVERSE rims. You often find examples with complete rims on the obverse and incomplete rims on the reverse. Thankfully the grading standards allow for this. It's a challenge to assemble a set of Barber halves in lower circulated grades such as VG with complete reverse rims.
Thank you to all who responded to my question. I do, especially, appreciate the information on the reverse wear, and, Jaobler, the photo was especially helpful - thanks.
