This coin is a darker chocolate than this. Something happened to the bottom of the "2". High AU, or possibly MS?

Here's an AU-58 obverse:

I'd say this one is close to AU, but (for me) would be placed in the Extra Fine category due to rim issues, hairlines, and the crud in the reverse lettering/wreath which would lead me to suspect somebody worked a little to get it looking AU.

I do love looking at large cents.

Certainly you are right. I noticed all the rim dings, but didn't notice how bad the rim is at top of obverse.

I like the coin, and the 2 in the date is interesting...it might just be damaged, or something happened in punching the top of the 2 into the die. I don't have a book on this series, but I see there's repunching on the 1.

Judging from what I see in Heritage results, there's no reason why this coin won't see AU50-53. The color is a little too red due to white balance; you can see it in the background being reddish instead of the black it seems like it's supposed to be. That'll make a copper coin look lighter than it actually is.

Nice Cent.
