I'm posting this because I like how it photographed.  The color is pretty true; I really like the toning these copper coins take. They are quite distinctive and must be due to some trace impurity in the alloy.  They also managed to put a lot of detail into such a small (15mm) coin...impressive to say the least! |

Great photo and great coin! I really wish that more attention was paid to Finnish coins. Oh well, more for those of us who appreciate them, I suppose.

Agreed--the Tsarist involvement in Finland produced some distinctive coins. More so I'd say than perhaps post civil war coinage.
I really have a hard time finding these coins without some kind of cleaning or problems.

great coins with alot of detail. Coins today I find lack the raised relief and detail of older coins.

I really have a hard time finding these coins without some kind of cleaning or problems Yes,there are lot of demand for those coins - mainly because of the Russian coin collectors (they collects Finnish coins and notes before independence, 1860-1917)and euro (markka-collecting increased before and after the introduction of the euro). The use of coins and notes are going down here in Finland (=less potential collectors)which probably means that some day these old beauties are cheap again. But I won't turn into plastic before using coins and notes is illegal  |

Eurocoin- Thanks for commenting--that's very interesting! I did not know of the demand amongst Russian collectors, but that makes sense in a way. The historical aspect is interesting to me, particularly since they were minted in Finland--were any earlier coins? |

All the Finnish markka- and penni-coins are minted in Finland(except one markka coins 1921-1922) since they introduced markka currency in 1860's. Russian rouble was so strong currency in 19th century that they created markka currency for very poor Finland.One markka was equal to 1/4 rouble. Under Swedish rule they minted silver coins in Finland (15th-16th centuries), but those are very rare nowadays. |
