1859 O Seated Liberty Dollar - Question Before Purchase

MrBreeze Valued Member United States 357 Posts	Posted 12/14/2020 10:38 am I am looking at purchasing a 1859 O Seated Liberty dollar. The coin has what appears to be two letters or initials scratched into the field of the obverse. It would probably grade G4 to G6. My questions are with the letters scratched in, should I still look at purchasing if the price is right? Could it ever be graded by a TPG? Thanks for any general thoughts on this topic. The price should probably be significantly under G(4) or G(6) money--maybe AG(3) or FR(2)? IF you really like the coin, though, then why not go for it if the price is right? The initials tell a personal story and add character unique to that specific dollar. I personally love coins with unique characteristics (sometimes defects) because I love imagining the story of how the coin acquired those characteristics.
