Modern Coin Marketing Limited was a third-party marketing company unaffiliated with either the Royal Canadian Mint (R C M) or Canada Post. They did, however, create their own collectible products out of the official issues of the two Government entities.

It created several philatelic-numismatic combination covers (PNCs) that combined a Silver Dollar issued by the Mint with a First Day Cover (FDC) released by Canada Post. Presented here is one from my collection: a PNC commemorating the "Tercentenary of Canadian Nautical History." I have a number of PNCs that feature a commemorative coin and stamp that celebrate the same topic. This PNC is a little different in that it combines stamps issued in 1978 with a Silver Dollar issued in 1979 - and the two celebrate different subjects.

The stamps on the cover were part of Canada Post's "Ships of Canada" series that began in 1975. The stamps here represent the "Ice Vessels" release from 1978 - they are the fourth group of stamps in the series. The multi-year stamp program began with the "Coastal Ships" release in 1975; it was followed by the "Inland Vessels" group of 1976 and the "Sailing Vessels" group of 1977. (In 1979, Canada Post switched to aircraft.)

The "Ice Vessels" stamps were released on November 15, 1978; as expected, the official Canada Post FDC shown here features the issue date with a cancellation in Ottawa.

The Silver Dollar (SD) included in the PNC was released by the R C M in March 1979. Upon its release, the RCM described the subject of its annual commemorative silver dollar as follows: "the Griffon, the first Canadian-built commercial vessel to sail the Great Lakes above Niagara Falls in 1679." The coin's commemorative reverse design was created by outside Artist Walter Schluep of Montreal.

Modern Coin Marketing Limited combined the 1979 Brilliant Uncirculated Griffon SD with the 1978 stamps/FDC to create a nautically-themed PNC collectible. It's not a perfect match of stamp and coin themes (i.e., relatively-modern Ice Vessels paired with a 300 year-old Great Lakes vessel), but at least they each commemorated a ship.

I haven't found an issue price for the PNC yet, but I would imagine at least $14.95 CAD - for context, the SD (50% silver, 50% copper) was issued at $5.50 by the Mint.

(The compression algorithm made the wallet's title difficult to see - it reads: 1679 - 1979 / CANADIAN TERCENTENARY / PHILATELIC NUMISMATIC COVER.)
