, and with everyone else above, and I will say that it is not possible for a mintmark to be that misplaced to my knowledge. Paridolia might come into play here (seeing things that are not there).
@brew, first welcome to CCF. Second, I've removed the poll functionality from this thread as I think that this will improve your answers. Third, I agree with the above that a nice close-up would help, but a stray circulation ding is the most likely culprit here.

Yes with all above--much larger, and sharp photos needed. With that, It would seem that post-strike hits and dings are responsible for creating features that look like numbers, letters, etc. (think Pareidolia).
