British Old Penny, Half Penny And Maybe A Farthing

futurshox New Member United States 34 Posts	Posted 01/27/2009 09:51 am This is probably the oldest coin in my collection, an 1899 Old Penny. When I was young and The Royal Mint was about to phase out half pennies, I stashed away a whole bunch of them. I still have that bag of tiny coins. This is the shiniest of them! Not sure what this one is (apart from scrap metal, pretty much!) but it's the same size as a Farthing. I think that's George V and you can just make out the shape of Britannia there, I reckon. Did Farthings ever have Britannia on? Report this Post to the Staff

I wonder why we had a bird (a wren?) on those, it seems out of keeping with the usual heraldry/plantlife themes on British coins. Although I suppose we did have a ship on the half penny.
