@jmw, this looks like a whole lot of circulation wear and tired dies to me. If you are convinced that there is a foreign object embedded in the planchet, then you could go to a local university and get some time on their scanning electron microscope to investigate that further.

I do not think you have wire here. You do not need an SEM-EDX for your coin. This test will tell you the composition of the material and the age also. Do not be mad, some confound high resolution microscopes with SEM. I do those test all the day and I know. The wire you think, I do not see IMO. The rest you show in very nice photos, wait tomorrow morning the specialists to answer.

Thanks for taking the time to add info to some of the images.
The top of the bays you highlighted look promising. could you find any markers that match WDDR-001?

The top of the "I" (UNITED) looks to be MD but I can't really tell on the "N".

The raised areas around the mouth may be die damage since any embedded metal would be flush with the surface of the coin from the pressure of the strike. Maybe soak in pure acetone to see if any of the raised areas will come off?

Also rotating die clashes more the location of the clash around even with just a few degrees that is caused by the die clashing event.

So slightly rotated are off caused after a die clashing event. When people see this off set view, they think cash. But a rotation of a die should be 45 degrees for more. How much is 45 degrees? Corner to opposite corner on the square:

So slight rotations of dies are not a premium. Probably the most desirable are the 180 degree rotations. The differences? One is done by a mint worker that didn't set of the die correctly. The below 45 degrees are just die movements from clashes.
