I'm still trying to figure out if I want to do top-down or prop the coin up and take pictures front-on.. It's a lot easier to get things nicely parallel with the coin on a flat surface. In the interest of spending more of your money, have you heard of DSLR Pro from Breeze Systems?

Do you have it? Does it work well? Yes, and yes. Assuming your camera is a model the software works with, of course. Physically set up the camera/coin tableaux, turn it on, and you never have to touch the camera again. Everything happens with mouse/keyboard, including all camera settings, shutter release, and image transfer. You can shoot as fast as you can click the mouse to change settings. All you have to do is play with the lighting. DSLR Pro is the only way to fly with coin shooting. |

That sounds like a really cool setup for Canon!  Controlling the camera would be great from a PC! I have nothing quite so nifty, but I do find Nikon's wireless remote very handy for my coin shots.  |

The software has a 15 day trial - wouldn't hurt to see if's compatible with the D70. I think the Canon software comes with a small utility that you can use to preview and take the picture when the camera is hooked up to the PC - I don't think it has all the capabilities of the Breeze software though (such as focusing, etc). I was going to download it and compare the 2 when I got some time to fool around with them.
The wireless remote for Canon works well, too, but I find it aggravating when I have the camera pointed down since the infrared is on the front. It's workable, though, and definitely cuts down on camera shake when not using the 10 second timer.

I've tested out the utility that comes with the Canon software. It shows what's on the LCD, and you can click to change any setting (easier than going through the menus on the camera half the time!). The only trouble with it is it does not show what you're shooting.. you have to focus then go to the computer, adjust settings, take the shot, and hope your settings changes will affect it the way you want. Does that other software let you see what you're taking a picture of?

I was wondering about tha "shooting from thr PC" aspect, also. I haven'y found whether zI can with the A580 IS, so that is still uop in the air. My other camera programs all allow this, which id good. I would be hard pressed, if I had to use the shutter button! Kurt, that is a nice lens you use. I have wiondered, but knowing your shots, I knew there had to be something more than just a camers. I just read the book, (again) and am about to make a series of shots, for effect, with varying settings. I don't expect to duplicate your shots,but if they come out clear enough ti see varieties, then I'll be happy. I enjoyed the comments from SuperDave, Kurt, and the others. They are very informative. Maybe I'll find a way to apply!  Dick |

SuperDave, Kurt, or any one else, I just remembered I have a camcorder, with 20X optical zoom, and PC shutter control. How useful would it be for coins? It has 800X digi, but I dont use it. Thanks for your input,

Dick, generally camcorders have only the most rudimentary of digital cameras onboard; it's very likely that your A590 will easily kick it's butt. It almost certainly won't focus at a macro distance, either.

xshift, are you rteferring to the "overlay, on the LCD? mine has that, but it does not allow "remote shooting,, so it is only good for settings.
.
SuperDave, do you recall the name of that file that is being mentioned? I believe I down-loaded it, but can't remember which of them it is.

Sorry, I didn't see your post until now. My LCD does not show anything of what is seen through the viewfinder - it's all settings. Unfortunate, but it's workable .. at least I thought so until I was trying to take pictures via the pc. I was hoping the software SuperDave mentioned (DSLR Pro from Breeze Systems) would allow seeing it. It says it does, so I'm definitely willing to try! Anyway, I think the file you are asking about is the DSLR Pro (PSRemote for PowerShots). I've downloaded it finally but haven't installed it yet (one small step at a time.. ). Unfortunately, it appears your model is on the "unsupported" list. After you get your settings all figured out for macro shooting and such, you might want to check out CHDK (camera hack to enable RAW shooting). Information can be found here along with links to the utility: http://lifehacker.com/387380/turn-y...super+camera (just keep that on ice for later.. RAW shooting allows a lot more control over your end photos!). I checked and your camera is not on the supported list, but it's not on the UNsupported list, either. The supported list hops right over it, going from A570 to A590  |

Some one said, or asked about my camera,that if it has a fixed lens it likely is a "Thru the view-finder", focusing. It has an adaptor for various lens. Would that indicate "thru the lens", focusing? It has manual "zoom, (optical), which I take to be thru the lens, focusing. The camera is a Canon Powershot A590 IS, with a 2GB stick. I have not owned a camera with different lens utility, other than a 16mm turret movie camera. Thanks for your info, and iopinions.
Kurt, I pulled this from the other forum, but I guess some of it remained. Sorry I got you "jumped on"!

KurtS - I don't know which Nikon you have but Breeze Systems do a Nikon version called NKPro
