Hi all! Just wanted to share as I think this coin is very interesting. It's graded MS 65 by PCGS. I assume it is just from a very over-polished die. Perhaps a disgruntled mint worker took out his anger with the polishing pad that day! What are yall's thoughts? Have you seen polishing lines like this before?

assuming those are raised marks, they look like the resulr of die scratches too deep in die recesses to be polished away

@nick10 Good call on the recessed part, I hadn't considered that it would be harder to reach recessed points on the die.
Would the scratches have been caused by the polishing process or are they unintentional damage?

@nick10 And yes sorry, they are raised.

But die scratches can't happen on the deepest parts of the die. I feel these are all coin scratches from a coin cleaning. A closer view of the will show they are incuse and the light is reflecting off of the incuse scratch marks. )).jpg) Note how the light reflects differently on the raised and incuse devices. (The opposite side reflects)

Looks like post-mint damage to me.
What did PCGS say about it?

PCGS would have definitely said something if these are post-mint scratches.
This looks to be heavy die polishing to me. There looks to be a second polishing, based on the lighter north-to-south scratches on the left side of the reverse, which likely got rid of much of the heavy polishing lines in the fields (but definitely not all of them!) while leaving the ones on the building.

I'd love to view the coin in-hand. Of course, that won't be happening. This is an interesting piece.

Here are some more pictures, wish they could be better. As Tanman2001 said there are definitely north-south polishing lines that look much more traditional as well. The top picture captures those a bit better than the trueviews. Coop, I hear you that they look like scratches, especially due to the chaotic nature of them. I am certain though that they are raised, and the straight PCGS grade further confirms it for me. The larger line in the field just to the bottom right of the mint mark is very interesting. It seems to be a continuation of "scratch" marks coming from the device. I wonder why there is a gap between it and the device though.

a foreign object, like the edge of a chisel or screwdriver tip, might have run across the fields and recesses of die, but only the flat fields were accessible to have the resulting scratches polished away

Almost looks like a defaced die. Hard to imagine those die scratches getting there unless it was deliberate.

Wow, that is super ugly and super cool! Looks like a mint employee didn't get the promotion he was expecting. Thanks for sharing!

Thats the craziest MS 65 ever, ha!
I like the "disgruntled mint worker" theory.
