Without resorting to buying mint sets, the best strategy would be to
take from pocket change, any coin that from a cursory glance, seems to be in superior condition, and put them in a one liter jar or similar
Collect every nominally superior looking coin over a period of (say) six months. At the end of the period, take out two of the best examples of each different coin, and return the rest to circulation.
Unfortunately, the Royal Australian Mint bags all coins as they drop in a pile, after ejection from the coining press. Expect all coins to have bag marking Therefore, only take the lightest of bag marked coins for your collection.
I have have been doing this for about the last 5 years and have managed to build a type set of all denominations and designs, of all types issued since 1966. My Australian Decimal coin collection now numbers around 400 pieces of all Elizabeth 11 effigies denominations standard types and commemorative types.
All taken from circulation, at face value.
Perhaps your cousin could sent a package to the 'States once a year, of new finds taken at face value from circulation.
Perhaps you could do the same in return, with US coins.
