1877 Indian cent from the F.U.P. auction I went to the state of Florida Unclaimed Property Auction over the weekend and managed to score what turned out to be an Indian cent album with only the 1886 Type 2 Indian cent missing. Most are have a Details grade from corrosion, scratches, staining, or some other issue but I'll take 'em. These auctions have items handed over by the banks from "abandoned" safe deposit boxes that haven't been paid in 2 years. Jewelry, coins, US mint products, currency, foreign, collectibles, etc, etc. I won two lots that were mostly wheats. Prices were fairly steep and the auctioneer was only on each lot for 20 seconds or less so I kind of lost track of which lots I wanted to bid on. I'll post individual keys or varieties I might see or know of in their own thread. Please chime in with any grade or variety number if you notice or are interested in. Here's a link to the 1909s IH for future reference. http://goccf.com/t/430025#3695867Thanks for looking and on with the show. 1877 Indian cent Words of encouragement are one of the major food groups. I'd grade this AG-03, but a clean and beautiful example for the grade.

How much did you pay for this lot?

I can't argue with those grades but I was wondering if part of the obverse weakness was from a weak strike. Maybe if the weakness had been on the reverse it might not have been so distracting? Thanks for staying bright-eyed and bushy-tailed CF. And thanks WS for reminding me of conserving it with the Verdi-care EDIT: Quote: How much did you pay for this lot? $400.00 (+10%BP) Quite reasonable now that I've found these in it. Otherwise I would have overpaid.

OP - The reverse weakness (in the center of ONE CENT) is one on the authenticating diagnostics of 1877 Indian business strike coins. It is normal to see this.

Thanks for that info WS. I may have heard that before but I sure didn't remember it. (Same thing will probably happen in another two weeks with my memory. LOL)

Thanks JBuck, Jake, and Dr. B
The auction was interesting to go to. The ones I was interested in ended in time for me to metal detect on my way home and add a whopping $3.50 to the till!!

Just a note.it is not weakness in the reverse, it is the die. Same diagnostics on all 1864-69 IHCs, some 70, 71, and 72s.
All 1877s were made with a sole reverse die from that era.
It is also called a Shallow N reverse, the "E"s on the reverse have different serifs in the middle as another diagnostic. It is a completely different design and it should not be considered weakness in striking or the dies.

Thanks Redrider. I wasn't aware of that weakness on the N as a diagnostic untill you and Western Sky pointed it out. I should have been a little more clear about the weakness I was referring to.
I was referring to the weakness near the rim on the upper obverse from K10-K2. I was thinking that might have been from the obverse die being tilted slightly If that had been on the reverse it would have been less prominent or distracting.
Not a super coin but still a nice hole filler for someone who never thought they'd own one.
Thanks again for all the help and guidance.

Of minor note, the proofs of 1877 have a Bold N instead of the Shallow N characteristic of the business strikes.
