I'm not sure if this is or isn't an example, I just don't know how to tell the difference. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

I don't think yours is an inverted 'S' it has the wrong serifs on it. your ends with a ball serif and the '44 inverted S has flat serifs at both ends, with the one at the top being larger (it should be on the bottom)

IMHO, after looking over the MM styles yours appears to be normal for the year. MMS-004 (Trumpet Tail)
