Have another coin for consideration. Please let me know what you think. It is a raised "J" but as the coin is not in great condition again not sure if just PMD. Again thank you all with your help and patience.

I see a foreign substance/gunk/adhesive, stuck on the surface.
What do you mean by retained st ?

Dried crud. For fun, give the coin a long soak in 100% acetone. Chances are good that crud will break down.

Soaking now just to see but it is very hard and would not come off when I tried to remove it with a toothpick. Will see what happens.

@dan, with that amount of dried glue on the surface, you might find that this cent is over mint specs on weight.
