Hi everyone,

I am new to coin collection. I find the information on your forum useful. I have so many coins that might be rare/error/valuable, but I am not an expert. So, I probably will have many questions to ask. I mainly focus on Nicle, half and one-dollar coins. In particular, I want to learn how to identify (w/ a high degree of certainty) the 1971-D Kennedy half dollars that were minted on 40% sliver planchet. I spent a good amount of time searching for a criterion to make a determination (visual under tissue, magnet, drop & ring, etc.) and I am still not sure.

Thanks

The tissue test usually will tell you if you have a silver coin. Take a pre-1971 Kennedy half and put it next to a post 1971 copper-nickel clad half then put a tissue over them and you will see the difference. once you see the difference, you can try your 71 D. If you still are not convinced that your 71D is not silver, you can weigh it.

Usually you can see the cladding on the edge. If you find a '71 that's silver and shows cladding there's a good chance that's it. Without the visible cladding it's probably plated.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

Sure-fire method is XRF testing, but that can get pricey if you don't have a machine available. Weight difference between clad (11.34g) vs. 40% silver (11.50g) is relatively small and less useful. Ping test on an appropriate surface is helpful but could damage the coin.

I'll add this: while the odds of it being 40% silver are infinitesimally small (it's probably plated, either nefariously or as a science experiment), it has been known to have happened: https://www.coinworld.com/news/us-c...-silver.html
