Rev. writing definitely says "French writer Zola" in Russian. Obv. writing also begins with the word "French", second word "ADVOKAT'", third word which would be the name "LASORI" (probably, this one's hard to read).

Aha, great! Then the medal refers to Alfred Dreyfus, or rather the Dreyfus Affair. Emile Zola defended him (famous "J'accuse" article), and Fernand Labori was a lawyer for Dreyfus (and Zola) ...
It seems a large gold medal was made for him (which he refused to accept for a long time), with smaller ones made of silver and copper. However, they don't mention having both people on them - just Zola. So I'm not too sure where this one came from. But it's good to know the history behind it - thanks!
