I'm a bit confused. It appears I need to determine the value of a coin when I send it in to PCGS or ngc to determine the price tier for certification. What happens if I pay for a coin thinking it's likely an ms-66 and it is determined to be an ms-68 and valued much higher?
Sorry for the novice question. I haven't sent any coins in since the 90's.

Yep.

You estimate the value for the insurance when you send it to the TPG and also because some tiers of service have value limits.

After the coins are graded if your price estimates are seriously low, they will contact you to let you know that shipping for the return will be higher than you originally estimated. Also, they will contact you if you selected the wrong tier.

Thanks
I was afraid the value I place on it could influence their grading decision. That's kind of a poor policy having different prices for different value of coins. One ms point can sometimes be thousands of dollars difference in value. I wish it were a flat rate for all.

No you don't

You don't want to pay the higher prices for inexpensive coins on economy submissions.

FWIW, everything except the coin, and certificate number (for data entry) is blinded in the grading room.

Good to know.
I see a lot of certified coins I think are over graded as well as under graded. I keep hoping technology will provide a more consistent grading ability in my life time. It seems like prooflike and deep mirror prooflike is all over the board. Obvious PL seems overlooked especially with dates where it's common.
