When you ask "should it have a striped outline instead of smooth?" are you asking if it should have a reeded edge rather than the smooth edge visible in your first photo? If that's what you mean, then yes. A broadstrike occurs when the coin is struck without the collar die engaged. And since the collar die is what imparts the reeded edge, a broadstruck dime like this will lack reeding. Report this Post to the Staff

On a broad strike the collar which makes the reeds malfunctions and doesn't engage. Which lets the 2 dies smash the planchet without anything to stop it from going out. Sam, I'm a slow typer. Yes it should be 'striped' or as it is called reeded, but the collar that creates the reeded edge did not deploy and thus we have a broad struck coin with no reeds. Collecting since 1972.
