Could you please point out the rare and unique error associated with this coin? All that I see is a well-worn quarter with a bit of post-mint damage.
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

to the CCF Concur with the prior statement - what are you seeing? I see a somewhat trashed circulated quarter.

Given the images posted, I'm seeing a stained, circulated quarter with some accumulation of crud. May have spent some time in moist soil or a poorly maintained fountain. As such, value would be 25 cents.
Gates1000... Please tell us more.

Is it in a slab? Looks like environmental damage to me,not an error. John1

@Gates1000 to answer the question in your title: A quick ebay search of sold listings reveals slabbed TPG authenticated specimens sold for up to $31. And, though I do not recommend selling without knowing with some degree of certainty (ie. Feedback from the knowledgeable folks on this forum), Raw unauthenticated specimens have sold for $0.99 up to $6.00. "There's a sucker born every minute" But to take advantage of that is bad form imho. That being said, I don't have the personal knowledge or experience to know if the coin is what you claim, but wish you the best of luck. And for reference, you may wish to read an article from true experts in the field: https://www.error-ref.com/?s=Improperly+annealed

To CCF! This quarter is circulated and shows environmental damage. It's PMD and only worth 25 cents.
Errers and Varietys.

Sounds like someone told you ms64 and unique error for this coin or you are just guessing, either way it is wrong . Unless it is slabbed, and shown otherwise, it is just a stained coin worth 25 cents.

How would you stain a coin like that I couldn't even do that if I tried to make it look the same?

I agree with (igwt79) If you joined CCF to learn and ask questions. Every once in awhile you just might not like what the answer is. This coin is just environmentally damaged. Sorry.

All I see is "user error" the user sees an error where there is none.

Quote: I agree with (igwt79)... I agree with them as well as everyone saying this is a damaged and stained coin. (Possibly a metal detecting find.)

Quote: How would you stain a coin like that There are infinite ways that a coin can become stained, damaged, or corroded. It's not always possible to exactly replicate the environmental damage to any one coin. The important thing is there is no evidence that this coin has an improperly annealed planchet or any other error. And it's certainly not close to MS64.
