Introduction

The 1990s saw the development and growth of promotional phone cards and other stored value cards - they spawned a new collecting area that became quite popular for a short time.

Though they never achieved the same mainstream acceptance as coins or paper money, the cards did reach a level of popularity that supported multiple collector's magazines, including Moneycard Collector and TeleCard Collector in the US, as well as a nearly 800-page illustrated catalog, published by Amos Press, Inc. in 1997, showcasing thousands of cards from the US and Canada.

Phone cards were designed to replace the use of coins in pay telephones (remember those?). Calls were placed to a toll-free number which accessed a central service network. Once the phone card was verified, the caller was connected with the desired telephone number. The popularity of the early utilitarian cards soon spawned a market for collectible versions.

An extensive variety of themes and topics were presented on collectible phone cards and other types of "money cards" during the mid- to late-1990s. Just about any thematic interest a collector might have had was likely to be featured on one or more issued cards - sports, comics, American history, art, patriotism, wildlife, landmarks, etc. Depictions of coins and paper money on the cards was fairly common. Popular collector coins such as the Indian Head cent, St. Gaudens Double Eagle ($20) and Morgan silver dollar were all featured on multiple cards from multiple issuers.

For a time, they were a popular souvenir item for coin and stamp shows. One could collect dozens of these cards from shows such as the 1994 American Numismatic Association Anniversary Convention held in Detroit, the 1995 National Silver Dollar Convention in Las Vegas, the 1996 El Paso International Coin Show, the 1996 Washington and Baltimore Coin & Currency Show, the 1997 Greater Cincinnati Numismatic Expo and a good number of others. The majority of these show cards were issued between 1994 and 1998.

1997 Blue Ridge Numismatic Association Conveention Card

The Blue Ridge Numismatic Association (BRNA) joined the list of numismatic organizations to issue a souvenir phone card for its show/convention in 1997 with a card for its 38th Annual Convention.

The card featured a $1.00 note from the Planters & Mechanics Bank of Dalton, Georgia. The quality of the note's reproduction on the card was not very good (possibly the result of the use of a low-resolution image as its source). As such, the vignettes on the note are very dark and lacking in detail.

Using the Haxby numbering system, the note appears to be a GA-150-G2b note as it lacks the pink tint seen on G2a notes and appears to have the hand-written change to the issue date (the last '5' of '1855' overwritten with a vertical line to make it resemble a '6' to make '1856'.)

1998 Blue Ridge Numismatic Association Convention Card #1

There were two souvenir phone cards issued for the 1998 BRNA Annual Convention. One featured the GA-150-G2a variety (Haxby) of the Planter's & Mechanics Bank $1.00 note. The note depicted has an issue date of 1855 and features a pink tint that reveals the denomination "ONE" below the central vignette. The image of the note on the 1998 card is much improved over the previous year's card with the various vignettes being much brighter and clearer.

Wrap-Up

Each of the BRNA cards was good for five minutes of long-distance telephone service accessed through TELEDEBIT which was a unit of Interactive Telecard Services (ITS). The back of each card provided the details for how to use the card to make a call. (Note: the card shown is unused and so its scratch off 'Security Label' which hides its PIN is still in place.)

The cards are just slightly larger than a standard business card, each measures 2-3/32 inches by 3-3/8 inches. The cards were produced in small numbers, with just 100 of each available. Each of the 1998 cards also came in a "Jumbo" version which was even more limited - just 20 of each Jumbo card were produced.

I have a few of these souvenir phone cards in my collection, but not many, Most of what I have is US commemorative coin-related, with the majority linked to th 1996 Atlanta Centennial Olympic Games. I find them an interesting, though minor, facet of our hobby.
