Note the breast, is it wear or weakness of strike. Coin has good lustre in person. LOT of difference in this one for AU vs MS pricewise. Trying to decide to slab it or not with PCGS or NGC. Metalman Pillar of the Community United States 7123 Posts	Posted 03/31/2006 3:00 pm Hi Morganman With my limited knowledge of these coins everything looks right with the mint mark,, although I'm not as sure about the strike on this coin ,, the affected area all east on the reverse could possibly be due to a weakness in the strike of this coin. the coin is still worth having slabbed even in mid AU why not send it in ? Morgan Fred Rest in Peace United States 2684 Posts	Posted 04/01/2006 12:16 am I'm responding to this tasty thread (I eat Morgans for breakfast!) before looking at others' replies. I'm venturing VF-35 to EF-40 based on hair wear (especially over Liberty's ear) and the Eagle's breast, using my own PCGS-graded Morgans as benchmarks. Too much wear and tear to make the leap to AU. Also, there appears to be a fair amount of marks on the fields and on Liberty's face, but this might be a function of the image, especially if it's in a plastic holder. If indeed they are on the coin and as severe as the images makes them look, the marks will drop the coin down ever further. As Bowers mentions in his Red Book of Morgan silver dollars and MM says in his intial post, there's a HUGE jump between circulated and uncirculated 1884S Morgans. Like a factor of 10X to 15X between AU and MS-60; above that, the grades aren't even on the same planet as the circulated coins. Whether to send it in to be graded or not... If it were me, I'd send it in no matter to what I thought it might grade out. It's a whole lot easier to sell a slabbed circulated Morgan than a risky raw Morgan. There's just too many "problem" raw Morgans on the ebay market to risk buying unless I had money with which to gamble (I have and have lost as many times as won). And I feel the Morgan-buying market is maturing to the point where it is growing increasingly mistrustful of raw Morgans. Now to look at what everyone else has said. Morgan Fred Rest in Peace United States 2684 Posts	Posted 04/01/2006 12:21 am Yeah, I thought so: we're looking at the Morgan through a plastic holder which may or may not be scratched up. If we were looking directly at the coin and it still had those marks, I'd agree with Susan: harshly cleaned. But, we need to see it outside the holder. My guess at grades still holds, however: VF-35 to EF-40 presuming the scratches are on the holder. Fred PS - Hi, Rick! I'll try to beat you to first guess for the next Morgan which shows up. I usually try to look at Coin Grading Practice just after I check out ebay Discussions.
