Here is a 1904 Morgan, it has some rim bruises on the obv. What would you say the grade is? Was the a weakly struck coin? The reverse breast feathers are not very strong, but has a lot of detail in the hair on the obverse. 1904.jpg[/url]

Very hard to tell from the pic's. I think I'm looking at AU details weakly struck across the eagles breast. With the rim bruises net EF.

Yeah, the pics so not show the hair detail off very well. It definately looks uncish in person. Let's say it is MS61, what would the bruises knock it down to?

With the obverse rim the way it is, I'd say MS60. These coins are known for weaker strikes and subdued luster.

Looks like AU to me.If the picture was more clear it might be UNC.

Image didn't come through at this moment (0845/10Mar); looks like a busted link somewhere. Will try again later. Rim dings, if serious enough will body-bag a Morgan.

Got it this time. If those rim dents at 2 and 4 o'clock on the obverse are as serious as they look in the image, none of the top grading companies will grade it. Without the dents,XF-45 to AU-50 although I'd lean toward the latter.
However, more important than the grade or condition is your satisfaction with it. If it fills a hole in your collection and it makes you happy, then it doesn't matter what others think.

Actually it is not a hole filler... just picked it up because the price was right.
The rim bumps are probably as bad as they appear. But the coin does appear to be unc to me...? Oh well, guess I just have to find the right buyer.

No, based on the hair wear above Liberty's ear and the lack of definition and apparent wear of the Eagle's breast feathers in the images, it's not uncirculated, even if it's a very weak strike. But, as we've always said in this Coin Grading category, it is very difficult, close to impossible to grade a coin from an image, especially a scan. All this rhetoric is for practice and learning (fun, too!) and shouldn't be used as an absolute guide. We might be able to get a grade into the ballpark, but often we hit long foul balls. A coin in the hand is a lot easier to evaluate.

I have this coin listed in the Selling section, along with others. So no matter what the grade, I think $15 is reasonable, below VG BID, no matter what the grade is.

$15 is VERY reasonable given the price of silver these days. JD, you're almost giving it away. You're very generous! Fred

Buy it right, sell it right. That's what I like to do. I am not out to make the big buck. I like to leave room for the next guy, which happened to be Mike.
