1834 Cent Grade And Variety?

Nice Large Cent!

My grade VF30.

There are only two varieties of "Small 8" 1834 Large Cents (Newcomb N-1 and N-2)

If you look at the reverse of this coin, note the distinctive heavy recutting on the top of E in CENT and more importantly the "point" below the T in CENT: this is Newcomb 2 (N-2) rated R1/common.

This is an E-MDS (early-mid die state) example. You can see the die crack starting to form between obverse stars 5-11. The profile doubling has not yet occurred, and the denticles are still fairly sharp.

This eventually develops into a complete die crack from S2-S13 with slight profile doubling in the LDS (late die state.)

The VLDS (very late die state) has strong profile doubling (double forehead); the obverse die crack now forms a complete circle through the date and stars, and another die crack on the reverse from the A in STATES to the wreath, along with rust pitting on the upper left reverse, and most of the denticles will be very mushy or gone entirely.
