I agree you should rinse with distilled water.

I'll have to create some distilled water for additional soaks as well..

You can get a gallon of distilled water at any grocery store for about a dollar.

I know it's a valuable coin, but it's a Lincoln Cent that likely circulated for decades, and now has caked on crud and possible corrosion. You could probably soak it in tap water without harming it.

yeah thanks - I'll be trying all these things. (I'm hoping that there is no corrosion though).. - we'll see though. I may have to go find a few cactus needles that I can use when the time comes to prod and gently poke this coin.

I guarantee it's good enough for use on coins.

OK, after a 2 day soak in Acetone Before and after images (before are shown first for each side)
Now the color is different probably due to a different lighting setup for the first images (don't remember the set up back then)
(EDIT to add the images I forgot about) and the focus is terrible on the original ones (should have taken newer 'before images' oops..

I've found that olive oil often softens up crud like this.

I experimented with olive oil on a similar looking 20"s coin. It did something, perhaps softened up the gunk
but I did end up using acetone and it changed the color slightly. Perhaps to it's actual color? I dunno.

Well it is a slow process but I think I'm making some positive changes so far..
The images are first a repeat from above and the next is taken this morning for comparisons.
