I have a few US Mint Souvenir Sets in my collection - plus some
ANA Convention Sets - but the 1976 Set from the Denver Mint ranks among my favorites due to its commemorative themes.
Souvenir Sets were prepared by the Philadelphia and Denver Mints from 1972 through 1998. They were intended to offer visitors to each Mint an opportunity to take home a set of the "local product" as a souvenir of their visit. They were not typically produced/sold in large quantities, however, and never achieved the popularity of the annual US Mint Unirculated Set that includes coins from both Mints. (The 1982 and 1983 Sets are popular with collectors, however, as replacements for the Mint's Uncirculated Set as such sets weren't produced in 1982 or 1983.)
In 1976, the Denver Mint was producing the circulating US Bicentennial commemorative coins - quarter dollar, half dollar and dollar - plus the commemorative medals that celebrated the Centennial of Colorado Statehood (in bronze, silver, gold-plated bronze and gold). The Set presented here includes the copper-nickel clad Bicentennial quarter dollar and half dollar plus the Colorado commemorative medal (in bronze). The Set also includes examples of the one-cent, five-cent and 10-cent coins from 1976 that were struck in Denver (note "D" mint mark).
