So I bought a cheap usb microscope, so why not share my experience with this "toy"
Maybe some of you don't want to spend money on a expensive setup.
Fun for kids and adults, my son has been looking at coins with this

And here are my initial impressions

Pros, you actually can vamhunt quite good, magnification 50x1600
Its good enough to spot doubling etc.
Cheap!
It comes with adapters that fit usb c and micro
[Note does not work with iphone I think, but with and adapter..]
You can take photos from your phone and adjust the resolution.
Built in lamp

Cons.
Very shaky stand, the weight of the microscope make the stand shaky. Use a better stand if you have,
Hard to adjust focus since the button is on the microscope, minor movements make the picture shake 1600x#128515; frustrating
The connection to the phone is lost sometimes as you move the cord. Cheap stuff
You have to install a application

Conclusion, I do aprove! For 25 bucks its fun, it suits me for exploring coins and spot cleaning and errors. But not suited for longer usage. Quality feels cheap.

Some photos.
The product, lots of cheap variants of this on is avalable
First 2 variants of the krona a broken G and a large g over small g
Diecrack on a 1000 real
A doubled A and M on a roosvelt sms?
A doubling of libertys face? Just found this when exploring a morgan, no idea what is is
Doubled p and l on a morgan?
Grafitti
Some denticles and date on a morgan

Note! I have made no effort tod adjust lightning or take good pics, these are just random pictures

This is useful.

Good images of the doubled letters, however, are these images taken by the microscope or the phone?

The scope is connected to the phone, and I used varying grades of magnification, the pictures are very compressed to fit the 300kb limit on ccf. There is a snapbutton on the scope to take photos, one take a photo in the app in the phone, easier to do that, less vibrations.i don't know if the phone or scope takes the actuall pictures
nice for us that use the phone to photograph coins

If it's the phone that takes the pictures, it means that you've got to have a phone that takes good pictures.

My phone, Huawei Honor 8s, doesn't take good pictures.

Years ago, I tried an iPhone 5s to photograph Roman coins and it was pretty good but I wonder whether they will still work.

Happy Christmas!

Does the scope have a "settings" option to adjust the picture quality? Seems like you need to tone down the glare/exposure.

Yes it has and its possible to change resolutiom up to 1920.
These pics was taken in a dark room with only the built in lamp. The aim is not to take nice pics but rather to able to capture errors and varieties that I normaly can't photograph with my phone. And it does that good enough. I will try in daylight tomorrow if I have time, its boxing day after all.

100% agree. This should be your very next purchase. I have one that moves the camera vertically only, which is much easier for adjusting the focus and depth of field across the entire coin surface.

Sadly dusk today. Took some photos of the dime.
If I get a fixed stand the pictures would be even sharper.

The point is that I could not take pictures of these
Errors without the cheap scope. I think it does the job al eit not a pretty one. The dime is very hard to capture but look at the denticles you see sharpness.
Possibly a doubled america and and also some doubling on the date

Not bad for the price. And it's portable, so you can bring it to coins shows, estate sales, etc.
I looked it up on Amazon, and it was flagged as a "frequently returned item".

Yes not a suprise but ok reviews I expect it to last a year and for what I paid its enough.
The 1600x is bogus, but still fun and I found errors/vams I hadnt noticed

Use duct tape to mount the stand on a heavy piece of wood or metal, that should eliminate the shake issue, but the glare from these type of microscope is from the built in light that bounce off from the reflective surface of the coin itself. I'm surprise the app for the iPhone is missing snap feature to take picture instead using the button on the scoop itself.

good advice, the stand is woobly. have seen several similar scopes some of them must have a iphone app with snapbutton.
yes the glare is hard to avoid but it still captures the vams

Those pictures are quite a bit clearer than I've been able to come up on my Elikliv camera. I was of he opinion that most usb cameras were clones of each other, I guess I'm going to have to experiment more to come up to your level.... Thanks for the inspiration!
