I found this in the in-law collection. Purchased long long ago for $26.

It's weighs a little short at about 13.1 grams, diameter and thickness are in line and it is not magnetic.

Overall, looks highly suspect though the edge, despite dings, actually looked a little better than I expected in terms of the lettering given how poor all the other details are. Obviously has some see funky corrosion on the reverse.

I wondered about maybe someone fooling around and casting this sometime is the last 30 or 40 years. But why bother, definitely not rare, looks like maybe O-112 which is R.1. And is it casting of a worn coin or a contemporary circulated counterfeit?

What are your thoughts, contemporary or modern counterfeit?

It appears to be a more recent counterfeit imo. If you can make them in China for a buck or two and sell them on ebay for 30 or 40 bucks there's plenty of incentive to make a counterfeit common date capped bust half.

BH1964, very true, but this was bought 20+ years before the internet, so I don't think it is a Chinese fake, but quite possibly some other modern counterfeiter. I'm going to take it to one of the local bullion dealers for an XRF scan just to check the composition.

I don't have my copy of Davignon's book available, but there are online guides to the contemporary counterfeits. The Contemporary Counterfeit Capped Bust Half Collector's Club has excellent online resources.

Compare this coin to their 1823 Obverse 2 Reverse B coin in the online second edition guide, which they describe as is a white metal contemporary cast counterfeit of Overton-112. The lettering in STATES, date, and stars on your coin look similar.

This is a genuine coin that has been severely acid damaged. Any modern or contemporary counterfeit would not be made from silver. You can verify the metal content if you would like personal confirmation.
