I've been to dozens of coin shows over the years, small and large, but have never been to the BIG shows like ANA or FUN. Was planning to hit both this year as a buyer. Just noticed that I have to register / show ID to enter, even as a customer (not a dealer)? FUN says "Admission to the show is FREE to the public! Show attendees must first stop by the public registration booths and pick up their "HELLO" badge before entering the bourse floor. " And ANA says "Please note: Valid photo ID is required for show admission." I assume this is for security and / or marketing so not surprised but sure dont like this. I've never had to register / show ID to enter a show before. Even the regional shows with 100+ dealers I attend every year. To those of you that have been to these shows, what's your experience? Can you enter without ID or is it 100% req'd? I don't mind paying admission, even wear the little bracelets they give me. But ID to enter? Edited by jeffbuckes 06/24/2025 10:02 pm

If someone is set on stealing thousands of $ in coins/stuff (grand larceny, right?) wouldn't it be the least of his problems to show a fake ID? That being said, I'd have no trouble showing my ID depending on what they do with it (like write down my info or take pics? no way).

I have to sign in and get a name badge at the local show. I do not have to show ID, just sign my name and e-mail, which they already have on file to send me notifications for other quasi-local shows. I assume a larger show would be more strict.

When I go to ANA shows, I get free admission, but I have to prove it is me (ID shown).

The smallish shows around me all require ID. If it makes it safer, I don't mind.

I believe they do this for security. It's not like they are tracking what I buy or sell at the show, so I don't mind.

Before this thread goes off the rails, let me clarify: I don't care why the promoters want my info, they're not getting it. They can call it "security", I call it "data mining", either way doesn't matter. Just wondering who here has been to ANA or FUN and what is your experience with having to register / show ID? Are they going to demand my ID / photo just to enter? If so, I just won't go... no big deal, just want to know before I go.

I can understand that. They have already scraped enough data on us from visiting this and every other site we have been on the web. No need to give them an extra data point to cross-reference and index.

Our local club show (starting on Friday) requires ID from one member of the party to enter. We don't take down any info from the ID, just ensure that the person providing matches the photo. We get blowback from a few people every year, but we don't make exceptions. I've seen a few people over the years end up leaving and a few more who have to go back to their car to get the ID. We also have armed security in the check-in area and walking the floor.

What exactly is the big fuss about? You never did mention why you are so against the practice of showing ID's .

I don't mind showing my ID - I show them my Department of Defense ID card when I go in, and I notice that they are a bit more respectful to me. (not say that the security folks are not respectful, I just notice a slight change in their demeaner towards me).
but if they want an e-mail addy from me, I have a 'junk' address I give out, one that I have access to for replies if needed. This way any and all junk mail that can result from them 'selling' my info goes there and not to my main address.

Checking IDs is like posting a warning sign. It will not stop a pro, but it deters idiot people from doing idiot things.
