Today, it is often an achievement for an individual denomination of a modern commemorative program to sell more than 100,000 units. Such wasn't always the case, however. Two of the first three programs of the non-circulating modern US commemorative coin series had individual coin denominations that sold more than 7 million units!

Here's a quick look at the "Top 3" of the modern US commemorative coin series:

3. 1982 George Washington 250th Anniversary of Birth Half Dollar

Proof: 4,894,044
Uncirculated: 2,210,458
Total: 7,104,502

2. 1986 Statue of Liberty Centennial Silver Dollar

Proof: 6,414,638
Uncirculated: 723,635
Total: 7,138,273

2. 1986 Statue of Liberty Centennial Half Dollar

Proof: 6,925,627
Uncirculated: 928,008
Total: 7,853,635

The Statue of Liberty / Ellis Island coin program sold nearly 15.5 million total units. That might just be an unbreakable record within the modern US commemorative coin series! No other program has come close (or even reached half its sales total!).

Another Excellent Topic,

Clearly I can see why the " Uncirculated " versions are More in Demand, IMO because they minted Much lower amounts, Then the Proofs...

I base my thoughts on seeking Old American Classic Coinages, any type and The Rarest versions are Usually The Uncirculated Versions.....

Commems, I Love this Idea, Maybe More, The 5- Lowest Mintage on American ( classic ) Commemoratives....?

Those programs indeed sold a lot of coins. I don't see these totals ever being beat.

But - I reserve that final judgement until we see what the Mint has in store for the semiquincentennial. Perhaps these upcoming coins might inspire some Patriotic buying.

This question requires some context.

Did you mean classic silver or gold, or either?

Lowest mintage for a classic silver type coin? There were three with 10,000 total mintage (not including assay coins)

But if you examine the latter years of several of the long running series you come across some minuscule mintages. The 1939 Arkansas Centennial coins, for example, had mintages of ~2,100 coins at all three mints.

I wondered about the same. I think the number of circulating anniversary pieces will dampen the enthusiasm for the Mint's non-circulating offerings, but it will be interesting to see the results!

All three are strong designs, the two half dollars especially! I have all three in proof, but I'm looking for the uncirculated Statue of Liberty dollar for my modern commemorative silver dollar type set.
