I am slowly starting to get a handle on 1857 Flying Eagle cents. To start my learning on 1858, I picked up this coin for $7.

I can tell that it's the low leaf reverse variety, which I believe is the common reverse for 1858. The online resources are a bit confusing about the permutations of obverse and reverse varieties for 1858. One mentions four combinations of large vs. small obverse letters and low vs. high leaf reverses. Another describes a closed vs. open E on ONE, but I did not find that distinction elsewhere.

What are the various bits of knowledge that I should extract from this coin?

There are two major varieties for 1858: Large Letters and Small Letters designs. This appears to be Small Letters, with the A and M in AMERICA separated. It does not appear to be the desirable 8/7.

Nice study piece for $7, despite the deep knife marks.

Thanks! =)

I thought this coin is the Large Letters variety? I couldn't really make out the gap between AM. The spacing of the letters in ERICA seemed consistent with the Large Letters. Particularly the top gap between ER. I could be wrong, though, I am just starting on this year.

I agree that it looks like a large letters based on the spacing between the E and R in AMERICA. Tough to see what's going on at the base of AM.

You folks are probably right—hard to tell with the degree of wear. Thought I saw some separation between A & M.
