Bust Half With Double Profile - Coin Community Forum

adaalex New Member United States 9 Posts	Posted 04/13/2006 12:36 pm I recently aquired a bust half dollar that appears to have been die struck twice with a rather prominent double profile along the bust's face. I would like to get the coin certified, but want to ensure that this double strike feature is captured in the grading & description. Which grading service is the best to use for this and what service should I be asking for when submittign the coin for grading? Thanks! Bryan1315 Bedrock of the Community United States 14454 Posts	Posted 04/13/2006 12:37 pm if you could post a picture of the coin we could tell you if it is double struck, and then we would also be able to tell you if it were some klind of trouble coin also and go from there with the correct grading company to send it to Report this Post to the Staff

swamperbob Pillar of the Community United States 5362 Posts	Posted 04/13/2006 4:10 pm Along with counterfeits - I collected the Bust Half Dollars as a kid. I still have 60 or 70 of them. There are several dates where Strike Doubling was a real problem. It was caused by wear in the machinery. It shows most prominently on the profile. I believe I also have one dated 1824 with a seriously "tripled" profile. If you refer to page 622 of Overton's "Early Half Dollar Varieties" you can read his explaination of this rather common feature seen on many dates. Report this Post to the Staff

Susanlynn9 Forum Mom United States 5877 Posts	Posted 04/13/2006 5:22 pm If you are going to collect Bust Halves, I strongly recommend obtaining a copy of US Early Half Dollar Die Varieties. The new edition is out and has even more info than the third edition. This book is invaluable for these coins. Report this Post to the Staff
