For the last year I've pretty much had free reign on ebay to cherrypick the VAMs I collect, at reasonable prices. The serious 1921 VAM collectors are sticking to BU coins, looking for Condition Census, and I just want examples of each VAM regardless of grade (well, almost regardless). Another guy, who's also a member here, is fishing the same waters but we communicate regularly and have a sort of gentleman's agreement not to stick the knife too deeply into each other.

Then, along comes this third person who's decided he wants a collection of 1921D VAMs, and cost isn't much object. He's bidding these coins up to multiples of their PCGS Guide price, 5-6x their usual selling price not considering the VAM.

That's for EF-AU Morgans. How many other VAMs command 6x their grade price even in circulated condition?

Needless to say, my wallet can't be pried open under that kind of pressure. It knows better, even if I don't.

So, my plan is to take a break from buying, and try to archive and publish the 50+ 1921 VAMs I already have. In the meantime, I'm going to continue hunting just as hard as ever, and provide this guy with links to every VAM I find in the hopes that he'll complete his collection and drop out of the market.

Grrrrr.

Sorry to hear this. I sympathize with your frustration. Since price is not an issue for him, I'm sure he'll complete his collection quickly and then you can go back to buying. At least you'll have time to look at and enjoy what you already have.

Well, I can understand your frustration my friend. I have already dropped out of the "buying" market. I wanted to collect a complete set of $20 Saints and $2.50 Indians--AND a complete MS70 ASE--Imagine how I feel--, Granted high end stuff, but still--

At this point I have been considering "selling" some of my collection, but, alas, even doing that, I could not afford to pay the INSANE prices ask for many of the coin(s) I would love to buy--

I use to surf ebay every day & other places, and watch/track coins I am interested in--I have even stopped doing that--PLUS, if you think about it, more and more peeps keep joining the coin collecting club, altho I really wonder if these "new" guys/gals are really "investors" in disguise, and driving these insane prices UP up UP^^^^AND AWAAAAAYYYYY

The market is on fire RIGHT NOW, I hate to be starting now, and for us "poor" collectors, we are being priced right out of the market--It is ashame, but it is reality--On a couple of occasions I even considered selling off everything and find a hobby I can afford--But then again, my better half wants me to hold onto the many "rare" items I do have, not sure why, I can sell these guys off and make a "small" fortune now, but yet I hold onto to them, but yet, cannot be a buyer currently--
Very frustrating--Not sure what I will do in near future--

Quick...sell yours to him at 6 times markrt value....then when he stops you have more money to buy at market value again.

Rest in Peace

you know think about it are the morgans mostly being sold by the same guy, or guys because, they could have a buddy whos bidding the price up to get others to get stuck with the higher price and it would be easy to do all the seller has to do and buyer is pretend they did the transaction in a less than traceable payment method (not paypal)etc and give each other positive feed back. I think I have seen something like this before
