Going through some coins I found a 1955 D that is a golden color. Really bright reflects light. Did I strike gold or is this something normal?   |

Copper can turn many colours depending on the environment it has been exposed to.
It wasn't that colour when it left the mint.

Looks to be a nice, low mileage '55 D. Would serve as a good album hole filler until better comes along. And yes, copper is a reactive metal and can take on different hues when exposed to various environmental agents.

I have been told that back in the 1950s there was pennies put in cereal boxes as advertising. They were plated to look gold. May be this is one of them. Kids were encouraged to put the penny in their piggy bank. This was back when a penny could actually buy something. I am looking for more information on this.

Not from cereal, but junk mail. "Return this penny with blah blah blah." I assume the gold look served two purposes: grabbing your attention and tracking returns.  |

I remember those letters also when I was a kid. Must have worked as they kept sending them. Never thought to collect them. Just like a like a lot of other things I never kept but should have.
