I was watching a college basketball game the other night, and the announcer mentioned how a particular player had had a successful high school career in "DELMARVA". I've spent some time in the region (visiting),and decided that the three states that comprise DELMARVA would make for a good theme for a "Quick Bits" post - this time via a combined selection of silver coins from the "Classic" and "Modern" eras of United States ("US") commemorative coins.

For those unfamiliar, "DELMARVA" (sometimes written as "DEL-MAR-VA") refers to a peninsula on the East Coast of the United States that is comprised of the present-day State of Delaware, plus the Eastern Shore of the present-day State of Maryland and the Eastern Shore of the present-day State/Commonwealth of Virginia; it is often discussed as a combined geographic area due to its many shared cultural and economic similarities.

Each of the current States is associated with a US commemorative coin that marks its earliest days: 1936 Landing of the Swedes in Delaware, 1934 Tercentenary of the Founding of the Province of Maryland and 2007 400th Anniversary of the Jamestown, Virginia Settlement.

Note: Neither the first settlement in Maryland (St. Mary's) nor Jamestown in Virginia was/is located on the DELMARVA Peninsula. DELMARVA was simply the catalyst for this early colony "connection".story between Delaware, Maryland and Virginia.

Very interesting!

For what it is worth, this region would make a prettier and more natural looking State of Delaware. Natural borders are more attractive to me.

I've spent a fair amount of time in each of the three state segments that comprise DELMARVA and concur that they all share common geographic and cultural characteristics.

I however have not associated the respective coins you present here as associated with DELMARVA - but I see your point.

I strongly suspect that my fellow Maryland residents would not enjoy your proposed Delaware absorbing our access to the Atlantic!

If it were like that from the beginning, you would never miss it.

Okay, in another alternate timeline, Maryland owns all of it! Even prettier.

Not currently a MD resident, but as a native Marylander, I concur.
