I was watching this "1944-P" Jefferson and threw a last second bid on it and won. When I first saw it, I had my suspicions about the OBV of Jefferson's hair being the wrong era in design. I compared it to some other 44-P's and the hair is too well defined. The legend lettering font looks off as well. And it is not silver. I am pretty sure there are other tale-tell signs. It will fit right in with rest of my fake 7070 Type Set.

Have you ever, knowingly, bought a fake coin?

Thank you for your interest and comments!

I've stared at a lot of nickels, and superficially it looks okay to me. The 1944 nickels had a one-year change to the obverse text, with notably horn-like serifs on the T letters. A similar, but not identical, lettering style was used again in 1945. Then in 1946, standard nickel composition was resumed, and the obverse was changed back to something very similar to 1941, prior to War Nickel production.

How did you determine that it wasn't 35% silver? War Nickels have a characteristic ring when dropped on a steel table, but the chime isn't consistent and depends on the drop.

Yah, it's so hard to tell...but he does seem to be cheezing a bit more than I remember. Don't have one in front of me currently to compare, but I'm sure you'll know more once you receive it. Not the best photos I have to say.
