I know mods will place this in the correct spot. Do any of you own one of these? I know they're pricey, but I've been kicking around picking one up. Are they worth the price? Where is the best place to purchase? Thanks in advance.

There's Youtube videos about them. The newer models are more precise and sensitive than older versions. You can buy one directly from Sigma online or some coin dealers.

I've thought of buying one. But my local coin shop has a desktop size XRF which is licensed due to it's radiation. I think it goes deeper into the metal than a Sigma and shows percentages of the alloys. Customers who do business with him can test their silver/gold for free with his XRF. Sadly he finds fakes every month, people got screwed buying online, Facebook, fleemarkets, some sellers on ebay etc at cheap prices.

I buy mostly from well established online dealers and my local coin shop, very unlikely I'd get a fake.

If you buy a lot, trade or sell, it would be a good idea to have a Sigma.

Either the precious metals forum or the general discussion forum. It certainly is a mis-fit in this classic coins forum.

I know the moderators do a great job - but IMO you should strive to at least make an effort to get it right and not just give the mod dudes additional work.

I bought the Sigma Investor and like it a lot .Its a little cheaper than the Pro but there are some limitations ,it can not do the Canadian $ 100 gold coins as they use some silver . As well on encapsulated 1912 , 1913 and 1914 Canadian gold $5 you have to use the wand as they coin is small in the case. But everything else I tried it works on.

What about slabbed coins? Will the Sigma shoot through the plastic slab?

@the, I really like my Sigma Metalytics, despite it being a spendy purchase. I have used it exclusively on pms and unslabbed coins so far as I rarely purchase slabs. We might have had a couple prior threads here talking about these devices. I'll try to dredge them up and post links.

I just tried with 4 slabs: ANACS, NGC, PCGS, and SEGS (all pre-1945 US silver except for the PCGS slab, which was pre-1900 US silver). Using the wand attachment, I couldn't get a signal though any of the slabs. However, when I just used the base to get a reading, I got a reading on both sides of the coin with SEGS, one side with NGC, ANACS, and PCGS. I don't have calipers to measure the thickness of the slabs due to them having a peripheral seam, but perhaps the slabs where only one side works happen to have the coin biased slightly toward one surface.

Thanks for the YouTube advice. Now I'm trying to track one down.
