I recently purchased a fairly valuable coin in an old blue Anacs holder. Unfortunately there is a crack in the slab that goes over the reverse of the coin. The actual coin is fine however due to the value, it's likely in my best interest to get it reslabbed. While I would love to cross it over to NGC or PCGS, I don't have a membership. I noticed ANACS claims to offer a reholder service for $15. For reholdering old ANACS holders into new holders or for cracked/scratched/dirty ANACS holders. Can anyone with a damaged ANACS slabbed coin utilize the service or do I need to be a member to utilize that service? Do I risk them changing the grade? I've never send in a coin to a TPG so I'm not familiar with the process. $15 seems pretty cheap so that's why I'm skeptical.. Thanks for any info you can provide..

Correct. ANACS is membership free and only charges for the service plus return shipping. Just add a note to the form stating you wish for a reholder. As for the firm, I've always liked them despite the past reputation.

I really appreciate you taking the time to respond. I also called ANACS and they confirmed it's the $15 plus the $42 shipping and insurance fee. https://anacs.com/wp-content/upload...n-6-2025.pdfI will ponder this a bit more but will likely send it in. I assume a reholder just automatically gets the same grade?

Crack looks pretty minor. Should be fine in the zip lock holder.

Did you explicitly tell them it was the early easy open blue, vs. the later blues that use the same shell as the current yellows?
Reason for the difference is they can transfer the later label to the new shell, but they can't for the older ones. Be prepared for them to call you that it needs to be regraded.

Quote: I assume a reholder just automatically gets the same grade? Are you sure they will reholder it with the same grade? You might want to ask them first is the reason they switched to the yellow slabs was after an ownership change and at that point they would not GUARANTEE any of the previously slabbed coins. https://anacs.com/the-anacs-guarantee/"ANACS guarantees the grade and authenticity of coins it has certified and encapsulated in an ANACS holder since being purchased by new ownership on January 1, 2008."

EDIT: Based on the verbiage in the fine print, I believe I'll be eligible for a reslab. Using this site, It appears I have a GEN 7.2 used in 2006 and 2007. https://oldslabholders.com/anacs-ce...-generationsGiven the verbiage in the fine print says "Coins certified before January 1, 2008 will be reholdered using a blue label." They must accept them without having to regrade. It sounds like they would keep it in a blue label though instead of the newer gold/yellow label (likely to indicate the old anacs graded it). It still might be worth it to get it in a more secure holder even if it still has the crappy blue label. They say to grade the coin and not the slab. I'm not an expert on WL halves but the 1919-D is absolutely notorious for having a weak strike so I think the grade is fairly accurate? I don't think the reverse eagle legs ever had much detail to begin with on this particular year/mint mark. There aren't many to compare this to. The AU details ones I see currently look awful compared to this one. I hope mines not cleaned, it looks like normal circulation to me but I'm not a pro grader. I'd even be happy if this was a 50.

Here's a little more about the 1919-D Walking Liberty for anyone curious. Even better - anyone else have one? Credit to David Hall: Like the 1919 and 1919-S, the 1919-D is rare in all circulated grades and very rare in high grades. It is even rarer still in mint state and in Gem condition it is the rarest of all Walking Liberty half dollars. There are just a dozen or so MS65 examples known and anything higher than MS65 is almost unknown. This is a rare coin in all grades and a major 20th century condition rarity in Gem condition. Strike is a major problem with this issue. Most 1919-D half dollars are very weakly struck thru the central devices, with little if any hand detail on the obverse, and often with weak eagle's breast feathers on the reverse. The lack of striking detail is the major reason Gems are so rare (couple with the overall rarity of the issue in mint state.) Luster is also often a problem and there are some mint state examples with unattractive toning. In short, finding a pleasing mint state example of this issue is very difficult.

Wow! That sure is a nice one, congrats! Strike looks pretty good for the year/mm. You're making mine look bad :)

If you want to get it crossed over to PCGS or NGC, maybe find a local coin store, that dies that service and send it through them.

Well I ended up just doing the ANACS reholder service so I could get the coin in a newer gen holder. I don't love ANACS but I don't have a membership to NGC/PCGS and no close LCS so this was my easiest option. They received the coin but I noticed they issued it a new verification number on the site. When I look up the new cert number it just says "Grading has not been completed for this coin." Online it says they retain the same number if you reholder so I don't know what exactly is going on. It would be a nice surprise if they accidently reholdered it into a yellow holder instead of blue but I don't know that I will get that lucky!
