1901 $5 & 1902 $10 Liberty Gold Coins - Please Help Grade

apsco17 New Member Canada 2 Posts	Posted 06/20/2009 5:35 pm They both have the mark S on them = minted in SanFrancisco. I'm curious as to the grade. Looks to me like the $10 coin is a higher grade. I'm new at this so any help is appreciated. Also, if I'm not out of line for asking in this forum, what is the approx value of these coins? vermontensium Moderator United States 16681 Posts	Posted 06/20/2009 7:06 pm Judging by your pics of these two beauties, I'd give the $5 an AU50 (wear on the high points of the hair, eagle's breast feathers) and the $10 an AU55(Wear on highest points with better luster). Nice coins I noticed you used the term "heads side". Just an added note, $10.00 gold coins are called "Eagles", therefore the $5.00 is called "half eagle". I noticed what appeared to be some scratches by Libertys mouth and nose on the Eagle. BH1964 Bedrock of the Community United States 10982 Posts	Posted 06/21/2009 3:55 pm to CCF. I would grade the $5 piece a bit lower than the previous posts. The $5 piece looks EF40 to me while the $10 "Eagle" shows much less wear and looks to be AU55. These are both "common dates" and in raw, circulated condition bring about 10 to 15% over melt value. That would put the $5 "Half Eagle" around $250USD and $500USD for the $10 "Eagle". ANA #R3154474 Report this Post to the Staff

Bear in mind that the resale value of these coins will be 10-20% lower than these figures if you sell to a dealer. Also, since they're common dates you may not have any interest. Oh, there I go again talking about money instead of coins...sorry sigh ;-) Welcome aboard, I'm new meself here! These are indeed common dates, or "Type Coins" as they are called, meaning they are representative of the type and have higher relative mintages than others in the series. The term "Type Coin" can be a good or bad thing. Bad as in "Oh, that's just a type coin, we're not interested" or good as in "Dude! That's an excellent Type Coin for your collection!"
