2008 Nickel Damage - Coin Community Forum

Bullnuke Valued Member United States 184 Posts	Posted 07/05/2009 09:25 am After going through 2,000 rolls of nickel and sorting them by date and mint mark. I decided I have toooooooooo many nickels and storage would soon be a problem. I have started looking at the coins through a loupe (16x) to keep only the finest examples, started with 2008(haven,t gotten very far) and I have found a dozen coins looking similar to the one pictured. I was wondering exactly what causes this ~~phenomina~~ issue. and is it common in the series. Additionally are there any other errors/varieties I should be looking for. Thanks for the info. hockingzig Pillar of the Community United States 1450 Posts	Posted 07/05/2009 11:36 am I have noticed the same thing and have a theory. THIS IS ONLY MY THEORY,not based on anything but observation. As I looked at many specimens, the problem seems to be related to the shape of the design. It looks like the natural metal flow that occurs with"pressing" metal is somehow disrupted by the die because of the shape of the design. I may be way off base on this but that is what it looks like to me. Report this Post to the Staff
