Well, after some debate on whether to go to the supermarket or not, I decided I better just go and make it quick. I just got out of the gym at 7:30pm and was tired and hungry, but needed some food for my work lunches for the next few days. I'm walking by the Coinstar machine in the supermarket lobby, I always check the reject at the bottom, and come across a middle-age gentleman with a handful of coins he was staring unhappily at. Of course, I noticed the gleam of silver from about 10-15 feet away. I approached him and asked if the coins were silver. He replied , "Yes, but the machine wont take them." I then asked if I could purchase them from him and he eagerly smiled as if I was doing him a favor. He counted out 40 silver quarters and threw in two wheats and a few canadian coins. I gave him $10 and the deal was complete. Here are the dates of the quarters:
1 Standing Liberty - no date 1 1937 12 mixed 1940's 9 mixed 1950's 17 mixed 1960-1964
Sorry for the long story, but it is amazing what can be found when you least expect it. Thank you Coinstar for rejecting silver!

Here's what to do: get that guy and ask him to sell all his old coins to you! What you got was awesome!

Surprising. He knew they were silver but didn't know they were worth 6 or 8x face, and of course you didn't tell him. Oh well.

Every time I see some one use those I kick myself because I would LOVE to search through it first. I would gladly search through 1000+ coins just to find one I like.

I wouldn't brag too much about ripping off the old man. Remember what goes around comes around. Kindness should have made you give him more than ten bucks. But I'm just speaking for myself!

First of all, . I'm certainly not bragging about finding the silver quarters. My main point is that you never know what you will stumble across. Nowadays, it is very difficult to find any silver in circulation, but every now and then you get lucky. As proven though statistics on this site, you can go through 20 boxes of halves and find 0 silver and then your next box has 50 silver halves in it. You simply never know what you will come across. I feel I did not rip him off, he could of went to a dealer to sell them, but chose Coinstar instead. I walked into the situation, he did not come to me asking for my advice. If he would have asked I would have been honest with him. As for your advice-" what goes around comes around", maybe this was kindness coming my way from the lord for some of the good deeds I've done in my lifetime. Just a thought...

also. You should have been more honest. Especially because you knew the value. I honestly feel sorry for the old guy.He probably and most likely cashing in coins to survive. Knowingly taking advantage of a situation and someone is just plain wrong. I personally would never have pulled a stunt like the one you pulled. How would you feel if someone pulled that garbage on you father or grandfather. I'm sure you would be more than a little upset. Always remember "What you do today, you will have to sleep with tonight". I've been here only a short time. A few things I noticed was the amount of knowledge and help that the members of CCF have to offer. But, The two things that are big here is honesty & fairness to each other which carries outside the CCF forum. IMO you are wrong!

I think I would have told the gentleman his quarters were worth much more than face value and then offered to pay maybe $40 for the lot. I would then ask whether he had other old coins he might want to sell. I would feel virtuous about sharing a small bonanza with him, and perhaps a door for further business would open.
Nevertheless, I don't fault you for how you handled it. He was aware the coins were silver and still wanted only face value for them. Hey, at least you paid better than Coinstar! They charge 8.9% handling fee which would have been deducted if the machine had accepted his quarters.
