How odd. He new they were silver and only sold them for face value? Good for you!

Every time I see some one use those I kick myself because I would LOVE to search through it first. I would gladly search through 1000+ coins just to find one I like.

I wouldn't brag too much about ripping off the old man. Remember what goes around comes around. Kindness should have made you give him more than ten bucks. But I'm just speaking for myself!

First of all, . I'm certainly not bragging about finding the silver quarters. My main point is that you never know what you will stumble across. Nowadays, it is very difficult to find any silver in circulation, but every now and then you get lucky. As proven though statistics on this site, you can go through 20 boxes of halves and find 0 silver and then your next box has 50 silver halves in it. You simply never know what you will come across. I feel I did not rip him off, he could of went to a dealer to sell them, but chose Coinstar instead. I walked into the situation, he did not come to me asking for my advice. If he would have asked I would have been honest with him. As for your advice-" what goes around comes around", maybe this was kindness coming my way from the lord for some of the good deeds I've done in my lifetime. Just a thought...

also. You should have been more honest. Especially because you knew the value. I honestly feel sorry for the old guy.He probably and most likely cashing in coins to survive. Knowingly taking advantage of a situation and someone is just plain wrong. I personally would never have pulled a stunt like the one you pulled. How would you feel if someone pulled that garbage on you father or grandfather. I'm sure you would be more than a little upset. Always remember "What you do today, you will have to sleep with tonight". I've been here only a short time. A few things I noticed was the amount of knowledge and help that the members of CCF have to offer. But, The two things that are big here is honesty & fairness to each other which carries outside the CCF forum. IMO you are wrong!

I think I would have told the gentleman his quarters were worth much more than face value and then offered to pay maybe $40 for the lot. I would then ask whether he had other old coins he might want to sell. I would feel virtuous about sharing a small bonanza with him, and perhaps a door for further business would open.
Nevertheless, I don't fault you for how you handled it. He was aware the coins were silver and still wanted only face value for them. Hey, at least you paid better than Coinstar! They charge 8.9% handling fee which would have been deducted if the machine had accepted his quarters.

Silver Eagle, stories like yours and the castigation that follows is very common on this forum. A bank teller here related a similar story of accepting a roll of Walking Liberty halves from a customer and got attacked by some CCF members. Another forum member told a story about purchasing dozens of Morgans for around $6 bucks each at a yard sale and he got an earful too. If you handed the old codger $40, there are some who would still berate you for paying only 4X. Your story is a good one that belongs here, but there are some who will want to make you feel guilty. Moral of story: If you score in this fashion, maybe its best to keep your mouth shut.

whoaaaaaaaaa... this one is getting a little hot! If the guy (middle aged, not old) did a simple google search for silver quarter value, he would have found out what they were worth. If he was too lazy to do that, then shame on him. If no one ever bought anything for less than it was truly worth everyone would have a tough time making money. If you slack off for half a day at work do you tell your boss not to pay you for that? You should according to the logic of some members here, since you "ripped him off"...
I know nothing about antique furniture but if I have a piece that I think might be an antique and I sell it to some guy for $100 when it is really worth $800, then shame on me for not doing my research before I parted with my possesion. I wouldn't blame the guy who bought it for $800, just myself for being careless...

Good catch Silver Eagle.
I'm with Jaobler, if the guy was willing to settle for face minus coinstars cut then he came out ahead with your deal.

So what some of you are saying is that if you go to the bank and get silver coins, you go back in and give them an additional .50-1.00 per coin (or more) because they are worth more than face value. Somehow I'm thinking, No.
Here you have a guy that is willing to give away 10% of his money away to coinstar.(coinstar fees in my area) So he was willing to sell $10.00 in quarters for $9.00 Theoretically he did give the guy more than what he was expecting to get. I don't think I would have handled it any different.
Didn't I just see on another thread that somebody picked up a 1908s Indian head for 1.50? I'm pretty sure that the thought never crossed his mind to say, Hey, this coin is worth 100.00 so here's 100.00 instead. I know it wouldn't have even entered my mind. (Please don't be mad at me for using you as an example...it is not a personal attack)
Good catch.

I agree with what some of the others have said. The guy who was willing to put the coins in the coinstar machine actually came out ahead by not having to pay the fee. I also look at it like this, if it was a mutual transaction and both parties are happy then whats the big deal.
Its not like the Silver Eagle twisted the guys arm or anything.
Just my 2 cents worth.
Congrats on your find.
