I have just one that I received in change a while back, and the ones in my proof sets. These posts (all nice pictures) got me interested again so I called my wife at home as asked her to stop at the bank.
My wife just got back from the bank and they told her that they no longer carry 50 cent pieces, and she could not even order a roll. I have here calling other banks now. Where does one go to get them?

Banks don't have them any more. They'll take them but they get returned to the mint and melted asfaik. I will put forward that RBC can usually get mint rolls of whatever is offered, if they can't get them then it's a bit of a dead end. I've started buying rolls from ebay and dealers as per my other thread on no respect for 50 cent nickel pieces. I've acquired about 400 mixed ones so far as well. Some of them are MS most AU (not because they were circulated per se, just because they've been slid around too much). |

Just picked about 15 of these at a local TD bank. 50 cents each.

That's funny, because that is the same bank that told me no way. Three branches. My wife also called th RBC and they too said they no longer carry any 50 cent pieces. Looks like it's luck of the draw. I do know that one of the tellers at my local branch has a collector as a husband, which I suppose would greatly reduce my chances of getting anything good anyways.
I just rechecked my collections (still cataloging a few years of hap-hazard collecting) and found that I have a few of them. Not a bad start, but a long way to go.
I have the following. Unfortunately they are all nickel.
1968, 69,70,73,75,78SJ, 79,89, & 2002

Ask around every so often. I find you either get a big pile of them or none. I give them away to one of my friends who collects them. They are cheap at coin stores though.

Hello all, I'm new to the forum and look forward to many entertaining discussions about my favorite hobby.
As far as fifty cents go, I absolutely love them. They are hard to find in decent condition (no rim dings and other pesky problems) which suits me fine because I like the challenge. I have managed to scrape together a PCGS registry set of Victorias and am now working on Edward VII (four down, six to go). George V and George VI are on my interest list too but I'm working on the older stuff first.
I'm also working on filling a couple of Uni Safe albums with low grade, problem free pieces. Easier said than done, especially with Victoria. So far I have a raw 1871H, 1872 and 1899. Anybody with the other dates, please feel free to send me a message. (Warning - fussy collector)....

I recently came across about 7 dollars of 1982 50 cent pieces. But I can't tell the difference between the "large bead/raised bust variety" and the "small bead/flat bust variety".
Can anyone help me out with these?

Please, using a loupe, check the bun just below the outward projecting jewel on the back of the queens tiara. If you can count 10 different strands in the hair befor a blank spot, it is a Small beadslow relief. If you can only go 3 or 4...it is Large beads... I hope this helps.

I like halves had a modest collection , about 5 years ago found e-bay listing for a library of coin album King George and Queen Elizabeth poor listing crappy pics etc bought it for like $80.00 or so 1937 to mid 60s complete save 4 or 5 coins , came in every Queen E were bu, 7 or 8 king George bu, 48 in fine 47leaf ef
unfortunately no 47 curved right, the other missing coins were varieties, pretty good score over all .
Now I just need a similar deal on the Vicky,s, if anybody is throwing out a 1890h or 1870no lcw your trash would be my treasure.

A local seller on a popular auction site has a nice 1899 half dollar listed, I don't think he'll get any bids at his opening price. What would be a reasonable price to pay for this coin? oasis....This coin just does not seem right to me
First is the color...
Second and most important is the 1899 is with Victoria Portrait: H4..
H4 has no space between a well defined bow and ribbon at the nape of the neck...
This coin shows a Large space between the bow and ribbon..Which is the Portrait H3.....H3 portrait is only on the 1881H, 1888, 1890H and 1892..50 cent coins... and not the 1899.
Just my opinion but check it out first...

In my opinion they are the greatest coin to own... I have owned every Canadian decimal coin minted including the maritime coin, and have been selling them off . My goal was to put together the very best of all from 1870 to 2010 which I have done... Vickies nothing less than VF 30 with many AU and AU+ & a few MSgrades, with only the odd one lower...My Eds.. are EF to MS , Georges are EF to AU+ and Georges VI Ms 63 to MS 66 -67 even higher .....
Gotta love those Halfs....... ps... I have an 1870 NO LCW for sale..VG with weak date only ? Takers can PM me...
